Dress For Success

Many people think that the dress code required for white tie and black tie is exactly the same Even though both are formal types of attire, there are some minor differences that must be considered

When it comes to men's fashion, men have it easy. These days, there are generally three types of looks that a guy is going to need to know how to pull off. The threesome of fashion looks include daytime, casual, and the 'hot night out.' All of these looks can be had by any regular guy, as long as they keep in mind a few easy pointers.

At some point in all our lives we've committed one of these fashion faults, or one that doesn't appear on this list but should. By being aware of the major fashion no-no's, we can all lead more productive, better-looking lives.

It is unfortunate that most men aren't born with, or don't acquire through life, the innate ability to dress well in any situation. Do not worry if this is you, as we are here to help.

    Dress to Impress

For the past 39 years I have worked in the service business. I have been a manager for most of those 39 years. My line of work takes me into the home of people who are elderly and or shut-ins.

About a month ago a registered nurse, who is an immigrant from Zimbabwe, came into my office seeking advice and directions on how to start her own in-home care business.  As we were discussing the requirements and the steps needed to start up a home care business, the young woman made a statement that startled me. The young woman said and “It’s going to be very difficult to break into this kind of business in the United States when you are black.”

A few years ago, my “look” was basic black. With a simple black business suit, white blouse, and pearl earrings, I was ready to go just about anywhere. I was appropriately dressed but not necessarily very memorable or remarkable. Some truth tellers in my life took me aside and gently suggested that some wardrobe adjustments would serve me well. Fast forward to today. Now, I wear vibrant, bold colors and sassy jewelry to better reflect my way of being in the world. My personality shows, and I stand out in a crowd. Heck, why wear a taupe trench coat when hot pink is an option?

When men dress for success ties are a must. But do you know how many ties you should own? Which style is best? Which color goes with what? This small piece of your ensemble can cause such anxiety. Why? Though it can be argued that styles change, the traditional suit is really quite simple. It's the tie, that small accent piece, that really completes the look. It says a lot about who you are and where you're going. Because it sits front and center, right below your face, and because it follows the direct line of your body, it's one of the first things eyes are drawn to, so your choice of tie becomes crucial to the perception others have of you. Choose the wrong tie and you make the wrong statement, which is why choosing a tie can become a monumental decision.

So, once again you’re in your “stiff suit” ready for another sales day. It's 98 degrees out, 70 percent humidity and the competitor just walked through the same office you’re calling on. He’s in khakis and a polo shirt, and everyone seems to love him; what’s your next move?

    Business ... Casual?

My husband joined a new company this past year, and within the first month he almost made a huge faux pas that could have ended any semblance of a grand new career.
