Dan Schawbel said, “The problem most people have is that they direct their energy into careers that they aren’t even interested in, instead pursuing their passion.”

We convince ourselves to spend our time doing what we "have to do" or "should do" instead of what we want to be doing. Why? At some point in our lives we were convinced that we have to do this in order to survive. We hear things like, “Of course it’s hard – that’s why they call it work." And we accept those limiting beliefs.

We're living with a chain gang mentality. We've bought the lie that work is supposed to be something that we feel miserable about. We become like robots, clocking in and out of our own personal purgatory in our unending search for redemption. We tell ourselves that we are a good husband, father, wife, mother because we suffered for the greater good.

Why do we believe those people who say work must be hard? Why do we accept a sentence to mediocrity? Why do we give up our dreams when we are challenged?

If you have a passion for fitness, the burn feels good. If you have a passion for entertaining, a negative review gives you insight into what your fans really want to see. If you have a passion for business, rejection simply eliminates the tire kickers and nay-sayers and brings you closer to the buyers. If you have a passion for service, its no sacrifice to leave behind creature comforts in order to help others.

Madonna has a
passion for entertaining. She's works at her craft because she loves it. She's become a popular icon by living her passion. Donald Trump has a passion for business. He's been up and upside down yet he perseveres passionately. Mother Teresa helped those in need because it was her passion. She never "tried" to be noble. Many would argue that she lived nobly; but she only claimed to be a woman living her true calling.

What do these three disconnected people have in common? Success in their field. Dreams passionately pursued. And a willingness to face their fears and go where many of us fear to go.

What can you learn from their lives? Face your fears. Address your feelings of inadequacy. Don't make up excuses. Don't blame your family for preventing you from pursuing your dreams. Do'ers find a way.

If you truly are afraid, at least be honest. Admit that you continue to do the work that you are doing because you really don't really believe you can make your dreams come true. Too often I see folks who have transferred responsibility for their dreams to their friends or family. Over time this becomes resentment. When you admit your own fears along with your dreams you free yourself to embrace your passion.

Don't keep your dreams secret. Share them. Tell the world. Announce what you want from the rooftops. Put a light so strong on those dreams that there's no room for fear to live beside them. You can have whatever you pursue with passion. Don't quit on yourself. Follow your bliss.

True greatness comes from passion. Let passion be the fuel that drives you to success.
