Success: Changing for the Same

Giuseppe Tomasi di Lammpedusa was an Italian writer who once wrote, “If you want things to stay as they are, things will have to change.” This is one of my favorite quotes because of its irony and humor. It plays counter to our intuition by which says that if you want something to stay the same, don’t mess with it. Leave it alone. But the truth is that things are constantly changing. Nothing stays the same if left alone. You have to work at keeping things the same. If you are happy in your life, you can’t just do nothing and continue to be happy. You have to continuously work on it. If you are successful in life, you know
you are constantly learning about yourself and growing. If your business is successful, you are constantly perfecting your process, changing with the market and the demands of the consumer or client. Nothing stays the same. So if you want things to stay as they are you have to work on it, you can’t just leave it alone. If you like your lawn to be green and beautiful, you have to fertilize it, mow and pull weeds and water it. If you just leave your lawn alone, it will grow weeds, grow tall and unruly, and usually turn a brownish color. If you are happy with your success, you have to keep working at it. You have to keep your perfecting. Keep growing. Keep learning.
