Success: Choose Your Words With Care

Plato was credited for saying, “Wise men speak because they have something to say; fools because they have to say something.”
Most people talk just to hear themselves speak. And they take every opportunity they can to talk about themselves. Ironically, you learn more by listening, than by speaking. And then when you do talk, it is so much more meaningful.
If you listen to most random conversations, like chance meetings at the grocery stores, you would be shocked as to what people will say to a perfect stranger. I remember when my wife was pregnant with our first child and random people would just come up to her and talk about how difficult their pregnancy or delivery was.
Why would you say that, especially to a new mom? Why plant that negative seed or experience to somebody else? Some people are so consumed with themselves,
that they don’t even realize what they are saying or doing. They are blind to the power of their words. They have to let everybody know about their problems. What would this world be like if we all stopped and thought before we spoke?
Say nice things. Don’t pass on worry and misery. There is a time and place to share difficult times but not in line at a grocery store. It is the fools who talk all the time, with no regard as to what they are saying or too whom. Don’t be a fool. Recognize the power of your words. Use them for the good. Share good stories, empowering experiences, joyful times. It will benefit you and the other person. Everybody wins.
There’s an old adage … If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. I’ll take it a step further. If you don’t have anything smart to say, just say something nice!
