The Art of Gift Giving

Good old uncle Walt Whitman once said that, “When I give, I give myself.”
If we can only learn this in our own lives, what a different place this world would be. Think about the holiday gift that consists of a gift card with a price tag; or the re-gift of aunt Mildred’s fruitcake.
The gift truly does not count if it does not include a piece of you. You are the gift. Your time, your efforts and your love. That’s it. There is nothing else. We too often mistake gifts as things and do not recognize how we fit into the equation. You are the only part of the equation, the material gift is only the extension of your love.
I wish we could go back to making gifts. I know, not practical, but needed today. When we make something we put time and effort and we pour a little of ourselves into it. If you have children you cherish everything your children
make you, a drawing, or ceramics even if you don’t recognize what it is.
I came home from a business trip and as I pulled into the garage I say a note and drawing on the door leading into the house. I was exhausted from a long flight and long couple days, but seeing the note from my daughter perked me up. I chuckled to myself, because I couldn’t really make out what she was saying, but it didn’t matter. I knew she missed me and wanted to do something nice for me when I came home. She wasn’t even up to see my reaction.
Sometimes, kids do things just to get the accolades. She hadn’t. She knew she would be in bed and she did it anyways. She gave of herself and her talents to tell me she loved me. She gave of herself with no expectation in return. What a gift. Remember, gifts are not just for holidays. We should give everyday, expecting nothing in return. It makes the gift even more rare and precious.
