One of the great gifts of life that a person can have is the freedom to choose. When I was a young woman, my father frequently reminded me that the things that I do and say are decisions that I make for my life and that those decisions will shape my future life either positively or negatively.

Wroten & Associates wrote in their September 2011 Leadership Insight article, “The greatest discovery of any generation is that human beings can alter their life by altering their attitudes."

Americans from generations past to present has always believed in the power of the mind and the spirit to create by pursuing happiness and overcoming adversities and fear. The American attitude has always been: “We will win, we will succeed."

Though we have faced adversity and challenges from inside and outside of our borders, we have been resilient because of our faith and belief in the unity of our country. As a culture, Americans embrace competition, whether physical or mental. Americans are known for playing hard and working hard to achieve our goals.

Sadly, in recent times, the American attitude has been strongly challenged. For many, this has led them into dark places where hate, fear, malice and injustice live. Too many have allowed the negative voices of politics and dissention to replace the creativity and ingenuity that has always been our strength.

Too many Americans now sit in front of television sets that spew negative messages, listen to radios that spout self-deprecating songs, and engage in video killing games, then blame each other and the rest of the world for our failed lives. The reality is that we are the ones turning over the control of our minds to those who would rape us of our positive attitude.

Americans need to wake up and smell the fresh air of positive thinking. We need to allow creativity take over our lives again  or risk sliding down slopes of failure. We must stop placing the blame on others for our own lack of self control.

We are the innovators. We are the inventors. We are the creators. We are the trend setters.

Only by recapturing our fire can we stop the cycle of adult children depending on their aging parents, aging parents depending on the government and our government growing increasingly dependent on foreign assistance from places such as China. We have to stop the domino effect, get up and dust ourselves off, and put our minds back to work.

The mature people in American should not only be concerned with the financial debt that will be left to our children and grandchildren, they should also be concern about the moral and psychological debt that will be left to our offspring for generations to come.

Sitting in side a church, synagogue or a building that is used to recognize our spiritual beliefs does not make us a good people. The positive teachings of love, tolerance and peace must live and grow inside of each and every person living in America or we are all going to suffer from the negative influences being passed down from this generation to the next.

I believe that there is still time for all of us to make a change and I say let's bring America back to the land of success, love and happiness where the people are brave and free. Let’s all say no to negativity in all forms and yes to a positive life. Let’s get America back on track ...
