Heights of great men
Reached and kept
Were not obtained
By sudden flight
But they while there
Companion slept were
Toiling upward through
The Night.
Written By Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
As a young child my parents always encouraged me to be the best that I could be. I remember my father saying, “You should always strive to excel in all of your endeavors.”
I have always appreciated people from from all walks of life. I believe that investing in people is the greatest investment you can make because it gives the best returns on the market. Because of my love for people I find myself observing them in different situations. I find it intriguing to observe people as they interact with others and enjoy witnessing people who truly enjoy helping other people.
A few weeks ago I really started paying attention to the people who are in the business of service. These people have daily contact with many people ... some joyfully, others without joy. Most people who choose service as their vocation seem to enjoy their work, but there are a few who really should reconsider their decision to work in a field that requires a great amount of interaction with other people.
Customer service is something we value. After all, doesn't every person on planet Earth enjoy being treated with respect? Don't we all enjoy being appreciated for showing kindness and love.
According to reference.com, customer service should be "a series of activities designed to enhance." When a person in this field asks the question, "How you are?" they should really want to know. They should ask because they care and because they see every human being as a person who has something to offer to society and the world. To be truly successful, those in customer service must believe that every human being can be successful in their lifetime and must legitimately care about everyone they meet.
Whether we are in the physician's office, a hospital, a grocery store, or our favorite boutique, we all like to be treated with respect and kindness. When practiced well, customer service can go a long way toward making someone's day better and keeping good customers coming back. That's why businesses that place customer service at the top of their list of priorities will always outlast their competitors.
Reference.com states that "Good customer service is the life blood of any business."
But I'd like to take that one step further. Consider that we are all in the business of customer service. If we all focus on the tenets of good customer service, what would the world be like?
Good customer service on our freeways and roadways could eliminate road rage. Good customer service to our families could foster peace and harmony in our homes. Good customer service to our friends and neighbors could foster world peace.
Skinny pants and skinny ties are our newest retro clothing fad. Let's make customer service the newest retro people fad.
