Happiness...exactly what is it? The English poet Samuel Butler once said, "Man, unlike the animals, has never learned that the sole purpose of life is to enjoy it." All too often we forget to enjoy the moment and appreciate each day for what it is. Instead, we get caught up in the notion that we must accumulate things to gain happiness. We see happiness in a wide-screen LCD television, a new car, the latest electronic gadgets, or even a pile of money in the bank.
Think back now to the last item you really wanted and then finally obtained. Did it provide you with happiness? Well, yes, it probably did for a while. Did it not make you feel happy to drive that new car, walk around with that new cell phone, or watch a football game on that big television screen? But that happiness was fleeting because the "newness" of the object eventually wore off. The new car you bought 3 years ago now has 60,000 kilometres on it, the tires need replacing, and the paint has faded. Chances are you now have your eye on a completely different car. Material objects can only provide you with a temporary and fleeting happiness.
So, what role does money play in our happiness? Making a lot of money, just like getting a new car, can be very exciting and provide you with temporary happiness, but eventually you will probably start wanting to make even more money. The key to real, lasting happiness is to focus on what you do with your money. Are you really using it to create lasting memories? Are you allowing yourself to truly enjoy your life?
Do you have goals for your life, and are you investing money in obtaining those goals? Are you taking every opportunity to create a happy and satisfied life for yourself and your loved ones?
Sometimes you will see an opportunity come by that you simply don't have the money for. Maybe it's a chance to take a trip and make some memories you would cherish for the rest of your life. Or maybe it's a chance to spend some time with a special friend. Perhaps it is an unexpected business opportunity. These are the things that won’t be fleeting, the things worth investing in.
Don't let those opportunities pass you by. Seek help with fast finance if it’s not immediately available. Don’t be afraid to borrow money for the things that will last and be worthwhile as long as the amount is within your means. A small payday loan can be a saviour when one too many bills come along before payday. The small amount is within your means to pay back and will get you through a rough patch. Instead, skip out on the extra 3 inches of TV you could have bought, the new shoes when the ones you have are fine or the 5-10 beverages you consume whilst out on the weekend. These things wont create a lasting effect. You have to ask yourself- will this be a defining moment of my happiness? If you follow that task, sooner than later you will get to the end of your road to happiness and it will have been worth every penny!
