A survey released by SUCCESS magazine revealed that 33 percent of Americans say that their top goal in life is to run their own company. Coming in a close second, 31 percent stated that their top goal is to retire early. These were followed by raising a family (16 percent), purchase a dream house and get in shape (both 10 percent).

While 33 percent may seem like a high figure, the reality is that America is a country that was built by independent thinkers who weren't afraid to strike out on their own and create their own destiny. Generations past valued held fast to the belief that life would be better with a corporate sponsored pension. Of course that was back in the day when health insurance was covered by employers.

With rising costs of health care leading to double-digit premium increases that are covered by employees and the portability of 401(k)s, employees are looking to their job to offer more than benefits and a paycheck. They want personal satisfaction, meaning and purpose. They're seeking an environment where they can make a difference. Add in an uncertain economy, layoffs and job cuts and you have plenty of reasons why respondents would want to open their own businesses.

Interestingly though those surveyed readily listed their goals, nearly 20% of those surveyed in a follow-up survey admitted that they had not defined their personal life goals.

“We were surprised to find that nearly one in five Americans answered ‘No’ when asked if they had life goals,” said Darren Hardy, publisher and editorial director of SUCCESS. “This sentiment encouraged us to create our list of 27 resources that could help get people on the path to success. The No. 1 resource—a personal list of life goals.”

The Success Magazine list of “27 Resources for Your Success" is a list of essential tools and technologies to help achievers gain the competitive edge. The 27 resources include:
